Indianapolis, IN – September 17th, 2023
Although the result differs from what the team had hoped going into the weekend, there is still hope to catch the GTD Championship leaders with two remaining races. De Angelis and the team will look to rebound with a strong result in a couple of weeks at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Roman De Angelis and The Heart of Racing Team were in Speedway, Indiana, this past weekend to race at the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the second to last stop on the 2023 IMSA WeatherTech calendar. The 2-hour 40-minute TireRack.com Battle on the Brick race took place on Sunday around the 2.5-mile IMS road course and was a pivotal race in the GTD overall standings.
Marco Sorensen and De Angelis started the weekend slow, with Friday practice session times near the bottom of the leaderboard, but they did show improvement from the first to the second session. In Saturday’s qualifying the duo was able to find some more pace in the car to put them in 6th position in class on the grid.
Heading into the race, the #27 car of De Angelis and Sorensen needed to finish ahead of the GTD leaders Bryan Sellers and Madison Snow in their #1 BMW M4 GT3 to keep their championship hopes alive for the final race of the year. Unfortunately, despite making up positions and showing good pace, the team ended up in fourth place, with the #1 car just ahead of them in the final podium spot. This gave the GTD championship win to Seller and Snow with one race to spare.
De Angelis and The Heart of Racing team will look to end the season on a high note at Michelin Raceway Road Atalanta for the Motul Petit Le Mans in the final race of the IMSA 2023 season, October 11th to 14th.
Roman De Angelis is a 20-year-old, multi-time champion racing driver from Windsor, Ontario Canada. In 2021 he’s piloting the #23 Heart of Racing / Aston Martin Racing, Aston Mark Vantage GT3 in the IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship GTD division.
