Roman De Angelis and Ross Gunn

VIRginia International Raceway – Oct 12, 2021

This past weekend Roman and his racing partner Ross Gunn participated in their final Sprint Cup race of the 2021 WeatherTech IMSA series in their Aston Martin Heart of Racing car. Going into the weekend, the team was still feeling the effects of a few tough races, but as they were still leading the series in points, they had their sights set on a win. For Roman, it was also a sentimental weekend, as it was his grandfather’s birthday, and after losing him earlier this season, he was racing for him again. If you recall, the last time he raced for his grandfather, he was on the podium and had a solid race, so he was going to take that feeling into this weekend.

The team had a good showing at practice rounds and landed in P7 for the race start. Going into the Saturday afternoon race, both Roman and Ross felt ready to bring home a win for this team. At the end of the almost 3-hour race, the #23 car passed the checkered flag 8th overall and 5th in their class.

Although they missed the podium for this specific race, their points in this solid showing on the track left them in first place for Sprint Cup Championship. This marks the first series win for the Heart of Racing car since its return to racing and the first win for Roman in GTD. Roman, Ross and the entire team have had a phenomenal season, and it showed at the end with their success. Roman shared how thankful he is for the team and the opportunity to bring this win home for them on his social media shortly after the race conclusion.

Although this marks the end of the Sprint Cup, there is still one endurance race remaining on the IMSA Weathertech calendar, the 2021 Motul Petit Le Mans, Nov 10 to 13 at Road Atlanta. Make sure you follow him on social media to keep an eye on what he is doing to train for his next races and his plans for next season.
