A Historic Weekend at Watkins Glen

March 26, 2024

Watkins Glen, NY

It was a historic weekend for The Heart of Racing team at Wakins Glen, with their #27 and #23 cars claiming the top spots on the podium. The victory was the first of 2022 for De Angelis and the Heart of Racing Team and the second top-five finish of the season after their runner-up finish at the previous race in Detroit. Ian James and Maxime Martin joined De Angelis in the #27 car for the six-hour race around the 3.4-mile Watkins Glen International road course.De Angelis, who was driving during the race's final stint, initially finished in second after having just enough fuel to coast over the line. However, twenty minutes after the race ended, the team discovered they were being awarded the victory after a drive-time violation involving the No. 57 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG GT GT3. The infraction came because an hour stoppage due to lightning with only a quarter of the race left caused confusion with strategy and minimum drive requirements for most teams. The win was De Angelis's fourth overall in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship series and will act as a massive boost of confidence after a slow start to the season for the team. De Angelis and the team will be back in action next weekend, where they will look to continue their podium streak at the Chevrolet Grand Prix, from July 1st to 3rd at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. This race will be a homecoming for De Angelis as it will be his first time racing in Canada in over two years, so be sure to keep up with all the action and news by following Roman on social media.
